Ford Police Interceptor vehicles pacing NASCAR races in Miami. Oh, how far things have come. NASCAR, as you may have heard, traces its roots back to moonshiners trying to outrun police cars. Now it’ll be the stock cars chasing after the police when NASCAR rounds out the season at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
The vehicles in question are Ford’s latest “purpose-built” Police Interceptors – the Taurus-based sedan and Explorer-based utility – which Dearborn rolled out last year to replace the old-school Crown Victoria-based squad cars patrolling America’s highways and city streets. The pair have been selected, much to the anticipated delight of race-loving cops, to serve as the pace cars for the upcoming Ford Championship Weekend, where all three of NASCAR’s major series – Camping World trucks, Nationwide Series and Sprint Cup – wrap up their seasons.
It’s not the first time, of course, that Fords have been used as pace cars in NASCAR – far from it – but while the Focus, Explorer, Fusion Hybrid and Mustang GT have all taken their turn recently as what they’d call “safety cars” overseas, this is the first time in the many years of leading the field in law enforcement vehicles that Ford will use its cop cars for the task.

Mystery super Lexus LS spotting lapping Nürburgring.

We spy, with the lens of our spy guy, a rather unique Lexus LS that’s taken to the track. Spotted lapping Germany’s Nürburgring, this particular LS is wearing puffed-out fenders, a strongly styled decklid spoiler, what appears to be a faux nose hiding new bodywork, deep side skirts and a pair of vents on the hood. Something sporty is afoot, and we’re itching to know more.
Toyota is clearly testing a super sporty version of its flagship luxury sedan. What’s not clear, however, is what exactly is going on underneath the bodywork. We do know that this is work of the automaker, and not an aftermarket tuner testing some new performance parts out. The license tags on the car are from Cologne, and the car was spotted at the automaker’s garage nearby.
Could we be staring at a Lexus LS F in disguise? The automaker has hinted in the past at such a car coming to market over the years, and this luxury sedan is certainly wearing some athletic upgrades. Funny, we thought for sure that a variant of the new GS was going to be next in line to get the F Sport treatment. Could this just be a one-off piece for the Tokyo Motor Show or Tokyo Auto Salon, or is it indicative of something more?
Final amusing note: The wheelman at the helm of this mystery “LS F’ must be new to the ‘Ring – that giant “L” on the rear window indicates he’s a Learner.

Subaru Impreza plus BMW V10 engine equals awesome. Subaru loves boxers. No, not the kind that beat each other into bloody pulps, we’re talking about the engine design, which places the cylinders directly across a horizontal plane, almost like they are swinging alternating punches away from the crankshaft – hence, the boxer name.
There are lots of good reasons to love the boxer engine – it allows for a decidedly low center of gravity and is inherently smooth due to its built-in balance – and Subie has certainly done much to advance the configuration since the days of the original Volkswagen Beetle (also boxer-powered). But what if you want your cylinders arranged in a V?

Well then, there’s always the ever-popular engine swap. While some would be content to drop in the tried-and-true Chevy V8, not everyone wants Bowtie power in their engine bays. At least one Subaru Impreza owner decided on nothing less than a BMW V10 ripped from under the hood of an M5.
Thankfully, we have video evidence that such a beating-heart transplant can pay big dividends. See for yourself in the video after the break, which was apparently shot just after the conversion was completed and before the engine had been fully tuned. Enjoy!

GMC’s all-new 2009 Yukon Denali Hybrid makes its world debut at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. It is a luxurious, full-size SUV that seats eight, tows up to 5,800 pounds (2,636 kg) and achieves an estimated 21 miles per gallon in city driving, thanks to the engineering excellence of the Yukon’s patented 2-mode hybrid system.
The GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid arrives in May at Buick-Pontiac-GMC dealer showrooms. It joins the Yukon Hybrid and Sierra Hybrid pickup truck in the GMC hybrid lineup, making GMC the first manufacturer to offer three full-size hybrid models.
“The eight-passenger GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid goes just as far on a gallon of gas in the city as a much smaller, V-6 Toyota Camry sedan,” said Susan Docherty, vice president, Buick-Pontiac-GMC. “And in terms of fuel savings, the GMC Yukon Denali saves about 250 gallons of fuel a year over the Lexus GX 470.”
The GMC Yukon Denali Hybrid infuses a new level of luxury to the Yukon Hybrid introduced for the 2008 model year. Docherty said the number one consideration for those purchasing the GMC Yukon Hybrid is fuel economy (80 percent); followed by 66 percent for its environmentally friendly technologies and more than half because of its technological innovation.

General Motors has announced that it will invest $328 million in its Flint, Michigan assembly plant to produce its next-generation GMC and Chevrolet full-size pickup trucks. Those trucks are currently manufactured in Silao, Mexico, and were built in Oshawa, Canada before that. The Flint Assembly Plant already builds the heavy-duty versions of the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, and adding the light-duty pickups to the mix will put all of GM’s trucks under one roof.
The investment is part of a $2 billion plan that the automaker says will create or retain 4,000 jobs across 17 facilities over the next year and a half. Flint will enjoy around 150 of those positions.
GM has seen its share of the full-size pickup truck market increase from 37.7 percent in the first five months of last year to 40.4 percent over the same period of time in 2011. The next-generation Silverado and Sierra are slated to hit the market in 2013, complete with better fuel economy.

A new, premium Denali model joins the GMC Acadia lineup for 2011, adding a new dimension of luxury and exclusivity to this popular crossover. It brings the distinctive Denali design elements, including a chrome honeycomb grille and monochromatic exterior color cues, along with exclusive fascias, high-intensity discharge headlamps and unique interior features.
‘The GMC Denali models have come to stand for luxury and exclusivity, and that’s just what customers will get in the new Acadia Denali,’ said Lisa Hutchinson, GMC product marketing director. ‘The decision to develop an Acadia Denali was made quickly within the new GM in response to customer and dealer demand for a Denali version ever since the launch and success of the Acadia.
Indeed, the Acadia continues to win over customers. In a still-recovering market, Acadia sales were up nearly 45 percent in the first quarter of 2010, making it second in brand sales to only the broad Sierra range of trucks.
In addition to the new Acadia Denali, the Acadia is offered in two cloth trims, SL and SLE, and leather trims designated SLT1 and SLT2. All models are available in front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive with seven- or eight-passenger seating configurations. A comprehensive safety system includes six standard air bags and standard StabiliTrak electronic stability control system with traction control and rollover mitigation technology.
New and revised features across the 2011 Acadia lineup include OnStar 9.0 and two new exterior colors: Cyber Gray Metallic and Gray Green Metallic. Equipment package revisions include:
• Preferred Package is available on SL models and includes Bluetooth, body-color moldings, leather-wrapped steering wheel with redundant controls and remote vehicle start
• New eight-way power seat with power lumbar and recline replaces six-way power seat
Heated cloth seats available on SLE models.

According to Kicking Tires, the Altima Hybrid suffered dismal sales in its lifespan, mostly due to the fact that the vehicle was only sold in a handful of states (those that stuck to California’s stricter emissions standards), unlike its main competitors.
Originally launched in 2007, the Altima Hybrid was Nissan’s first foray into the gas-electric arena, using a Toyota-derived hybrid drive system. According to the EPA, the Altima Hybrid is rated to achieve 33 miles per gallon in combined driving. Not bad, but quite weak when you consider that 40 mpg is the new benchmark.

Getting into a Camry really puts things in perspective. Just think about it. This is what a large portion of the general public flocks to when it comes time to purchase a new car (most likely to replace an old white or beige Camry), and that’s just sad. OK, the majority of people don’t buy the $35,000 V6 version with the optional $2,100 TRD wheels, but four-cylinder models (again, painted either white or beige) . . . you get the idea.
I’ve had countless people ask for my opinion about the Camry, and they’re always shocked when I spit out four or five other options that I believe are better than the Toyota. Without a doubt, the Camry’s name recognition with the public is its strongest asset.
Basically, the Camry has a PhD in mediocrity. Everything from the drivetrain, ride quality, steering, cabin materials to the fit and finish are all middle of the road, which is what sells to the masses.
To me, the steering is numb with little to no feedback and the suspension is tuned for a rather floaty ride, which is good to smooth out the many road imperfections around these parts. There’s respectable pull from the V6, and the six-speed automatic gearbox completes shifts fairly quick. The brakes are OK, too.
There’s nothing here to make the Camry noteworthy. Everything is just OK, which is something this car has actually been praised for in the past. I mean, come on! Praised for just being adequate in the most competitive segment on the market? Not on my watch.
However, I will admit that those $2,100 TRD rims do look pretty slick, but they help ratchet the as-tested price to an absurd height. To be fair, this is a loaded XLE model. Simply put, this car is more than capable of going from point A to point B and is built for people who don’t care about cars.
